Sharp is producing new
IGZO displays for next iPhone & iPad
Peter Misek, an
analyst in Jeffries, claimed that Sharp have resulted in modified IGZO—or
indium allium, zinc--technology to reach 330 dots-per-inch screen resolution.
Sharp’s IGZO technology will supply iPhone with an HD display，which
could let users freely watch movies on iPhone & iPad in
different formats, without using the IPS technology applied in the iPhone and
iPad. Because this modified display powers superior viewing angles, it isn’t
necessary to use dual-bar LED backlighting.
In his investors
report, Misek mentioned that IGZO panels are probably first appear in Apple’s
third-generation iPad. The new-type display owns rich features. For instance,
it can make the device be thinner and make the battery life be longer. It is
said that Apple will be able to obtain the panels at a lower-than-expected
price due to the huge number of orders from Apple. Misek also expects that this
modified player will be featured in a new sixth-generation iPhone which will be
released next year.
IGZO technology
offers the same potential consumption as OLED except its display which is 25%
greater than OLED. Earlier this month, it is reported that Apple use dual-LED
design in its third-generation iPad. Only two LED light bars can support the
same brightness for high resolution Retina display as iPad’s. However, Misek
believes that Apple could achieve the same goal without the need for Two LED
backlights by adopting Sharp’s IGZO technology. And Sharp has started mass
producing IGZO panels at its Kameyama No. 2 plant.
Misek predicts
that Apple will corporate with Sharp to develop OLED panels for the iPhone and
iPad, and those displays could appear in the next two years. OLED displays
could be only used in small portable devices such as iPhone and iPad at first.
Misek expects that Apple will realse HDTV in the middle of next year, but the
OLED panels for larger sized displays will not appear until 2015.
